corrupt files

I downloaded a web site, started at night, in morning still running. So I paused it. Then the system went 'blank'. No programs or docs in start menu. SO I try to restart computer and I get this message:

<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Before running the project I set the location to save to an external drive. But it still saved on C drive.

Not sure if any of this is connected but this is what happened. Any suggestions on how to fix the corrupt file or why still saving in C drive. My C drive is getting full so I tried redo project on external drive.

Main thing is to get my computer working again though.

Can you please tell me how did you set it to download to the external drive? Using the Project Properties dialog?

Offline Explorer still uses your temporary drive on C:\ disk. However it is not filled up - once a file ends downloading, it gets moved to the final destination, nothing should be left there.

There are several articles on how to deal with the HAL.dll issue:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/24942-35-missing-corrupt-please-reinstall

I hope they will help to recover from this situation.
