Downloading forbidden files

Have you ever encountered a link in an HTML publication that you downloaded that said you did not have permission to access a file? In the case I encountered, I checked to see if the file was in the directory structure and it is there and the source page is pointing to the correct path but I get a Forbidden message when I click on it.

Any idea how to get around this problem?

Here is the example of a files that brings up the forbidden message:

Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

Just remove the default.htm in the URL and browse to it online. Default.htm is necessary, because there should be some filename when a file is written in Windows.

The problem is, I am downloading this for Library and Archives Canada for the public. It has to work as is. A user most likely will not know that they need to add the default.htm to the URL. Any other way around this?

Perhaps, I just do not understand what kind of issue you have. Please tell me in details what you do and what errors you see.

Okay, here is another example, this time from Geist.

http://www.geist.com/

While this link works:

http://www.geist.com/books/eyre-affair

This link, to "books" from the above URL, will not:

http://www.geist.com/books

I get this message:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /workarea/sally.datars/geist/www.geist.com/books/ on this server.

Please replace oe.exe with the newer version:

http://www.metaproducts.com/download/betas/OEP3312.ZIP

I made the download with Level=2 and it worked well. Give me more details on reproducing this issue.

There are two problems with this particular title, Geist.

The forbidden file problem persists for the "books" directory. Any link to Books within the publication takes you to a message like this:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /workarea/sally.datars/geist2/www.geist.com/books/ on this server.

If you go into into the first review on the main page, for example, "The Eyre Affair" and click on some of the titles under "More reviews", these files work in my downloaded copy.
e.g. Click on "Three Day Road"

Within this file, if you click on a review, none of these titles is accessible. The linked files are not found.

When I check the "books" directory, I see that in fact, the files are missing, so the file not found message makes sense. But why did MetaPro download some files in the "books" directory and not others? This is the mystery.

Hopes this sheds some light on the problem.

Actually, it should place all files in the /books/ directory. As I see, you publish the downloaded site in some Web server. Can you please try offline browsing inside Offline Explorer to see if all links work correctly or not.

You may also try to make an export (Export Files button) of the downloaded site to that Web server root folder and make sure that the Standard Extensions box is checked.

What is the default document for your Web server? It is possible to change it in Offline Explorer - see the undocumented Registry sections in the Help file.

I have now tried both suggestions: browsing inside Offline Explorer and making an export of the downloaded site to that Web server root folder and make sure that the Standard Extensions box is checked.

The links still do not work when browsing offline.

Exporting the downloaded site did not give different results either except that when I click on Books, I get this result:

I don't know what you mean by "default document". If you mean the root, it changes depending on where in the archive I put the publication. There are numerous directories within the archive. The publications/websites we download must work regardless of where they are placed.
