oe crashes

I?ve got several problems with the offline explorer 5.9 pro...

sometimes during the downloading progress the program just closes...without any crash report...I dont know why and meanwhile it happens at irregular intervals...It?s pretty annoying because I never managed to load the whole website of around 8 gigabyte.

I doubt that you can help me to get the problem fixed but I just wanted to give it a try^^

Thanks in advance

Can you please download the updated version here:

Unzip the file and replace the old oe.exe file with the new one. Please let
me know how it works. If it still crashes, I will make a version that makes detailed logs.

hey there,

the problem still exists :( the program crashes every time...
Oleg Chernavin 12/13/2010 09:35 am
Please replace the oe.exe file with this version:

When it crashes, please send me the c:\download\oe.log file to support@metaproducts.com

Thank you!

Dear Oleg,

I'm using OE version PRO 5.7.3140 SR2 that was bought to you on 26/05/2008 and I am experiencing the same problem as "tr". I tried to download the version mentioned above, but I find that is no longer available. Can you help me with this issue?

Best Regards!
Oleg Chernavin 06/19/2011 12:03 pm
Can you please upgrade to the latest 5.9 SR5 version?

Will it work better?

Ken R 09/05/2011 07:58 am
I am using the latest Beta of version 6. I am having the same problem. After an indefinite amount of time, the program just exits. Typically it goes for a few hours and then exits. At first, I thought the issue was connections. I pushed it to 80. I started lowering it though and the program continues to do it. I am now down to 50 and the program is still closing. That's a big problem when I am trying to download large sites that have many files queued. Until this problem gets fixed, is there a way to set the program to restart and resume from where it was?
Oleg Chernavin 09/05/2011 02:29 pm
Can you try to do the following things:

1. Decrease connections to 10 (default number).
2. Uncheck the box "Index files for faster search" in the Project Properties dialog before you start downloading the Project.
3. If none of the above helps, start OE.exe from command line with parameter:

oe.exe /NoDB

Please let me know what of the above helps.

Thank you!

Ken 09/06/2011 09:09 am
Will do. I can tall you that the index search box is already unchecked. To the best of my knowledge, this has never been checked since I don't use it with these.

I'll try decreasing the number of connections as well. I had really just started with v6, so I have no history with it. That being said, this problem seems to be related to connections. I tried 80 and it closed within 10 seconds. I dropped to 75 and it went longer but still closed very quickly. I went to 60 and it went quite a while, but closed. I was down to 50 when I wrote to you yesterday. I am not certain if it is still on 50 or if I decreased the number of connections further, but I started it yesterday afternoon and it was still downloading the website this morning. It ran all afternoon, evening, and night and was still running when I left the house. I have more than enough bandwidth for 100 connections. Is there any way I can use a large portion of it or do I need to run the program like I was using a 28K dial-up line? Is there anything I can do to Windows 7 to increase the connections? Would it help the problem if I did?

I was also working with my computer earlier yesterday when it kept closing. So, I don't know for sure if it's the decreased connections or not doing anything else with my computer while I left it alone to just download. Whatever the case, things are clearly better and moving in the right direction.

Thanks, Ken
Oleg Chernavin 09/06/2011 10:43 am
Can you please tell me the site which you are downloading? I will try to set massive connections count and will see if it reproduces. Thank you!

David 10/28/2011 03:40 am
I have also been having this problem regardless of wich version I have been using, including oe6. I like oe a lot, but this problem makes it quite useless for professional use.

What basically happens is that it shuts down after some hours. It seems to be the same regardless wich site I am downloading.
Oleg Chernavin 10/28/2011 05:05 am
Can you please watch the memory usage - the maximum allowed is 2GBs? I am also working to minimize memory usage now.

David 10/28/2011 05:55 am
The memory usage does not seem to be a problem. The usage lies around 50-80 MG.

David 10/28/2011 06:03 am
Sorry, did you mean RAM? Or what memory were you referring to? Many of the sites are probably larger then 2gb. But that is not what you mean I guess?
David 10/28/2011 06:07 am
Sorry for spamming, but If you mean the graph "Used Memory" then it lies around 155 000 kb.
Oleg Chernavin 10/28/2011 06:42 am
That's OK. I really want to get rid of this problem!

Can you try to run Offline Explorer from command line this way:

oe.exe /NoDB

David 10/28/2011 07:59 am

Thanks for taking your time!

By typing "oe.exe /NoDB" or just "oe.exe" I only get the answer that it is not a valid command in the prompt.

Oleg Chernavin 10/29/2011 02:57 pm
OK. Then modify the shortcut you use to start Offline Explorer Pro:

"........./oe.exe" /NoDB

David 11/03/2011 04:10 am
However I do this I get the same respone.

This morning though OE had not just exited as it usually does. Insted it left an error message: "Invalid pointer operation".

Does this mean anything to you?

David 11/03/2011 04:28 am
It seems I got the oe.exe-thing to work. But the response is just "Access denied" even though I got admin rights.
Oleg Chernavin 11/03/2011 04:06 pm
Do you still use many connections? Does the same error happens on 10 connections?

David 11/04/2011 09:23 am
That time I used about 20 connections, wich usually do not do. The last time I tried to scan a web site I used 5 connections and got the following error message: "Access violation at 004025B4 in module 'OE.exe'. Read of address 4D3FC68C".
Oleg Chernavin 11/04/2011 05:16 pm
Another user reported me a site where Offline Explorer always fails. I will work to reproduce and fix this. I think, these issues are related.

However this will take some time, because I am travelling now.

David 11/05/2011 07:29 am
In my case the crashes happens sooner or later on every site, not just one particular.

Oleg Chernavin 11/05/2011 06:23 pm
One thing to check in this case is if Logging is enabled (Ctrl+Q). If yes, try to turn it off.

David 11/07/2011 05:24 am
Logging is allready turned off.

I have same problem with 5.9 pro.
It crashes.
And files are missing, for example, before the crash it downloaded 59000 files, after the crash, it started again showing downloaded 57000 files.
Oleg Chernavin 12/19/2011 06:58 am
Here is a stable version that should fix this:

DR 12/23/2011 01:33 pm
Hi, evem after this update it is still crashing, over and over. Nothing helps...
Oleg Chernavin 12/24/2011 08:24 am
I made another change that should make it stable. Can you please install this version?

KM 01/07/2012 09:43 am
This is also happening to me with my trial version 6.1.3704 SR 1.

After every download the software crashes.
Oleg Chernavin 01/08/2012 05:34 am
Can you please update to a more recent version at the same URL:

Please let me know how it works. If it also crashes, does this happen on 1 site or on all that you download? How fast it happens, after what number of files.

Thank you!

Да, проблема, которая была в 6.1 версии решена:

Eros 02/16/2012 04:03 am
No, it's not fixed. It's still there.

But I have a temporary solution, which will delay the crash, but I don't know, for how long exactly. I learned about it, when I was testing another spider (WeXtr). Anyway, NEVER set the Number of connections above 4!! With 4 connections, OE will survive 24h+ of downloading, but after setting it to 9 connections, it will crash in less than 12h.

In WeXtr, 5+ connections will overload even my i7 CPU. WeXtr won't crash, but I can't use my PC, while it's doing its business. But setting it to 4, will keep my system usable and allow WeXtr to finish its job.

So, I think, that OE can't keep itself stable, when it "overloads" end-user's PC. Recommend users, with crash issues, to NEVER increase the Number of connections above 4 or even try a lower number than that.

For example, HTTrack doesn't have any crashing issues about resource usage at all, it can do a job for weeks... before the internet runs out.

A recommended spider job "survival" goal: 2 weeks of downloading on a PC with 3.2GHz single-core CPU and 3GB of RAM.
Oleg Chernavin 02/16/2012 04:04 am
OK. I will do more tests on a high load. Meanwhile, I fixed an error in scripts parsing, which might be also a reason. Here is the updated OE.exe file:

Hans Christian Faerden 03/12/2012 11:13 am
Offline Explorer Executable has stopped working is the message I always get after trying to download a site. Is this the same crash message as you are discussing here? I have never been able to get Offline Explorer working for me. I use Win 7, and try to store on external drive. It works great until approx halfway into the download process.
Oleg Chernavin 03/12/2012 11:14 am
Here is the latest version that should be stable:

Hans Christian Faerden 03/14/2012 06:56 pm
Than you, but that is the version I was using. Is the problem that I download to external drive?
Oleg Chernavin 03/16/2012 03:18 pm
Yes, some buffers may be overloaded, because external drives are usually slower. Can you please make a test by changing the Download directory to an internal location and running the same downloads set?

Thank you!
