WMV audio but no video

Hi,

I have the same problem as a previous poster. I want to download a certain streaming media file (see below) and play it from the harddisk bcs I have a slow INET connection. However, when I open the downloaded copy in Windows Media Player it only plays the audio, but not the video. If I open the URL and stream it in Media Player it plays fine. Any idea what the problem might be? I assume I have the necessary player version and codec since I can stream the file. Also, it is free content so there are no license or password issues.

The file:

mms://195.85.253.68/storage/auto/Nyheder/Deadline/Deadline223020041212.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Please download the following URL:

mmst://195.85.253.68/storage/auto/Nyheder/Deadline/Deadline223020041212.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf

This should help.

Thanks for your swift reply! I tried downloading the link you suggested and this time I got the video.... but without the sound:-( Any idea if I can do something to get both in the same file?

This is strange, because I got both video and audio when I loaded the file. Can you please try again?

I also only got the video without any audio when I played it. However, the file size was 51.1MB this time compared to about 26MB when I used mms to download the file. I tried playing the file in WMP and PowerDVD 6, but both times I got the video but no audio.

I couldn`t seek in the file either.

Oleg - Is there any way that OE could automatically detect whether to use mms or mmst ?

Also, how did you know to try mmst ?

I tried again with the same result, no audio. Oleg, are you sure you got both, and if so do you have some special settings (the only thing I am inputting/changing in the wizard is the URL)? I get the same difference in filesizes as Defenestration. I also tried a trialversion of something called WM recorder and got both audio and video in the same file, so it seems to be possible.

I started loading the mmst:// link, waited it to load about 17 seconds, finalized it (right-click on the downloading URL) and browsed. I will try to investigate why the files are different in size when you load mms or mmst links.

I am having problems with geting video when downloading wmv streaming content. Please, help. I was downloading this link using the latest Offline Explorer Enterprise 3.5:
http://www.ftponline.com/conferences/virtual/vslive/2004/orlando/asx/ASP/AbstractingData.asx
which has reference to:
mms://a1824.v25178.c2517.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1824/2517/7d4a5a9/akamai.fawcette.com/2517/Conferences/vslive2004orlndo/091504/ASP2/AbstractingData.wmv
in it I am getting 45,632,675 bytes AbstractingData.wmv file that you can preview youself.
mms://www.rentalvista.com/Home/Streams/Demonstacije/AbstractingData.wmv
http://www.rentalvista.com/Home/Streams/Demonstacije/AbstractingData.zip

When playing online

WMP properties shows this:
Length: 42:56
Bit rate: 331kbps
Media type: Video
Video size 320X240
Audio codec: Windows Media Audio 9 16 kbps, 16 kHz, stereo 1-pass CBR
Video codec: Windows Media Video 9

Statistics/Advanced:
Maximum bit rate: 331 Kbps
Video:
Frames skipped 0
Frame rate: 5 fps
Actual rate: 4.9 fps

Connection:
Bandwidth available >3500 Kbps
Bandwidth in use: 628.3 Kbps
Protocol: RTSP (TCP)

When playing from disk using saved wmv file:
Properties dialog show the same values as the online playing and Statistics/Advanced:
Maximum bit rate: 331 Kbps
Video:
Frames skipped 0
Frame rate: 5 fps
Actual rate: 0.0 fps

Connection:
Bandwidth available Unknown
Bandwidth in use: 0.0 Kbps
Protocol: FILE

Can you try for yourself and recommend other options. If you recommended using mmst instead of mms how to dynamically change protocol mms to mmst during downloading streaming content?

Thanks

Oleg,

I trust you had a Happy Christmas & New Year!

Any progress with this problem ?

Also, if I right-click to Finalize early on in the download, the Finalize menu item is greyed out. If I right-click again Finalize becomes avaliable. IF I then Finalize the download, the download is stopped/finalized but the context menu does not disappear.

Lastly, if I try to play the file I get a still image, but it won`t actually play.

I"m sure Oleg is working on this, when he gets the time.

There are other recorders that do not have this no video problem.
Recorders listed with *WM would be a good place to start.
Streaming media recording software list.

I am sorry that it took a long time. I just improved assembling of MMS headers and this mms:// URL now loads well. Besides that, the context menu to Finalize streams is also fixed.

Here is the link to the updated oe.exe file:

No problem.

It still doesn`t work for me I`m afraid. I tried downloading with both MMS and MMST and when I try to play it I get a still image of the first frame, but it won`t actually play.

The context menu does work correctly though.

PS. The file sizes are now the same with both MMS and MMST (ie. 51.1MB)

Do you save the entire clip or Finalize it after certain time?

Oleg.

I`ve tried Finalizing it after 30 seconds and saving the entire clip, with both protocols, and I get the same result.

I just loaded 33 second of the clip and it works well. The sound is a bit "metal", but video and audio play both synchroniously. However Windows XP shows the video well, but no sound. Can you try to load about 30 seconds with some other download manager to see if the same problem occurs?

It looks like it IS a problem with my system. I just tried CoCSoft Stream Down and I have the same problem.

Any ideas what might be wrong with my system ? I`m on XP SP2

I tried 3 other XP systems here - they all display video but no sound. Something really strange. Windows 98 SE shows the clip well with both video and sound. :-)

Can you download 20 seconds, finalize it, and then send me the resultant video file by e-mail so I can see if the video will play with your downloaded file.
Oleg Chernavin

Sure. I uploaded it here:

http://www.metaproducts.com/download/betas/2.wmv

Video/Sound work well on Windows 98, sound fails on Windows XP.

I get the same result as when I downloaded it. Static image, with no video or sound.

It looks like it`s either a problem with XP or a problem with the WMV file.

After a bit more experimentation, the problems I was experiencing seem to have been caused by running under a limited account.

When I play the movie under an Administrator account I get video but no audio. If I use CrystalPlayer to play the file I get the error message "Can`t init DirectSound for playing audio", before it plays without sound. This might be some sort of clue as to what`s going on.

What really puzzles me is that the clip plays very well under Windows 98 SE. Maybe it is a kind of protection against downloading?

Offline Explorer Pro 4.0 loads this file well. I pasted that link, it redirected to:

mmst://210.210.2.74/bbpublish/fg29aug2005e43_1-128k.wmv

and then the sound was very well when I played the downloaded file.

I played the downloaded file with Media Player 9. What version did you use? Also, what version of Offline Explorer do you have?
