These days a lot of sites are using .ram and .asx and other filetypes that prevent the user from downloading the actual movie file to the hard drive. Can anyone recommend software that will actually download the movie files, not the linking file?

Offline Explorer Pro will help you here. It will load not only .asx or .ram file, but also extract links to RTSP:// or MMS:// files and load them to the hard disk.

Download Offline Explorer Pro here:

Oh I already have OE Pro! I didn`t realize it did that. Is it automatic?

Yes, surely. Simply insert a link to a .ram file and it should load the media stream automatically. For .asx files you may need to set Level=1 and allow downloading from all servers and directories.

I`m sorry I`m a little confused about how this works. Is there a good thread here in the forum that walks one through it? Does it only do one at a time manually or will it automatically do this as part of a site download?

That depends on you. If you give Offline Explorer a URL of a site that contains links to streaming files, you need to allow downloadng from all servers for File Filters | Audio and Video (their Location boxes), because in most cases such media files are located on different sites. Offline Explorer Pro will find such links and download them.

Or you can manually add a Project with the URL pointing to a .ram, .rm or .asx, .asf, .wmv file to download it just like you download a ZIP archive in MS IE.

Let me make sure I understand "All servers". That also means that it will be going out and grabbing every site with a link, correct?

Yes, but the way I suggested it, Offline Explorer will load only links to Audio and Video files from any site. All other links will obey URL Filters.
