FTP: "Status: 0 Unknown"
|Alex||05/27/2008 04:40 am|
When I downloading something from a FTP sites, often I receiving this error at the log: "Status: 0 Unknown", and the file(s) jumps to the end of the download queue (and this can be indefinitely!!!).
These errors happen in 50-70% of the FTP download attempts, and with MANY ftp sites. FTP servers are ok by themselves, and I can download the "problem" files even by IE without any "Unknown" errors as it is in OfflineExplorer.
The full log is below:

PS: why it got to be 2 x LIST commands, 2 x PASV commands, and everything else - so many "junk" while FTP''ing? :)

|Can I ask you to uncheck the PASV box on the Internet tab of the Ribbon and try the download again? Would this help?

No, the Passive mode is required for this only server. Anyway, the problem persists regardless this box checked or not (on different FTPs), I have tried all possible combunations of the settings (including PASV checkbox) - we dont have much of FTP setiings in OE...
It is not a major problem anyway (files still be downloaded accidentally after 3-7 or even more full rounds in the Downloading queue), but it greatly slowing down the whole process to the same 3-7 times instead of one. And I cant predict the reason - will they be downloaded at the next try or they will be kicked back to the queue for the next try again. I cant see the reason of NOT be downloaded (especially if other programs downloading those very same files without any troubles at all)....It is really unpredictable with this bug....
Perhaps I''ll stay with the older verson of OE - 4.1 maybe, there was no such problem so far. Very nasty. :(

|OK. I will work more on this to find out what could be wrong. Thank you!

Any good news for me, Oleg?

|Sorry, no. Sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes - no. I still cannot get any hint on why it happens.

Yes, exactly. Sometimes it is smooth as a silk, but sometimes - ......
The problem is that I havent managed to discover the true reason WHY. But the older version of OE (4.1) seems to be free from that...
Please inform me if I could help. Some external tests somewhere somehow, or whatever. The bug is really nasty and must be fixed ASAP in such of cool application as your one - and sooner is better. :)

|Yes, I agree. But really, I don''t know what happened. I didn''t make any serious changes in FTP since 4.1 version. It looks like some messages get lost sometimes. I was beta testing one application that worked with Internet and OE even hanged on FTP connections when this app was working.
After uninstalling it, everything worked much better. So, it is possible that some firewall or antivirus may influence FTP downloads. This is what I suspect. But I cannot determine what exactly goes wrong there and how to work this around.

I dont know that - there is no any (known) way to get the internal OE''s connections being deeply-sniffed using only the application (am I wrong in this? pls correct me if so). The log file sometimes not helpful enough....
And I am just too lazy to use a third-party sniffer. :) But I will, if requested.
>I was beta testing one application that worked with Internet and OE even hanged on FTP connections when this app was working. After uninstalling it, everything worked much better.
Well, what was the application?
PS: other applications, even the IE itself (running in parallel with OE) is able to retrieve the needed files without any troubles and with only try. But OE being constantly reporting "FTP: Status 0 unknown" at the very same time. Yes - by working in parallel, at the very same time at the same environment @ machine. :(
>So, it is possible that some firewall or antivirus may influence FTP downloads.
In my case - I dont think so. I havent have any active firewalls\AVs at my machine - but OE reports the very same 0-status even by working with my gateway''s FTP server within my LAN... :(
>But I cannot determine what exactly goes wrong there and how to work this around.
Well, do you reproduced the error at your side? Just curious....

|I will try to make a local FTP server and experiment with it.

Any news dear?
PS: I have updated to the version 5.0.2780 SR1. Still experiencing the very same problem. :(
