What is the version number of your copy of Download Express?
Please try the following:
1. Open the Download Express Options dialog
2. Go to the Connection tab
3. Set the threads number to 1 or 2 for all speed modes
4. Click the OK button
Then please test your downloads and write us about the result. Thank you!

Thanks for your reply. The version number is 1.9.0.337. I have done as you suggested and the problem has gone away. Does this mean that my machine is too slow to use more threads?

No, you just have the good speed of internet connection and does not need too many threads. Download Express needs to serve less threads and this does not freezes up the interface.
