CNet`s Download.com review of Offline Explorer

This full-fledged offline browser not only copies individual Web pages and online photo albums, it also downloads and lets you view entire sites offline. Its customizable interface lets you easily cope with numerous downloads by arranging them in folders. You can view retrieved sites or search for new targets from within the program with the built-in browser. Offline Explorer provides everything for easy downloading: scheduling; proxy-server support; smart Web-browser integration; connection control (number of simultaneous connections, bandwidth limitations); and an internal dial-up that disconnects when it`s finished or resumes broken connections.

Various filters cut unnecessary content, letting you determine what file types, sizes, URLs, servers, domains, and directories to skip or include. You also can retrieve only updated files, disable downloading or directories from a convenient site map, or simply drag missing pages from your browser. Dial-up Internet users may find Offline Explorer a godsend.

Offline Explorer - Brett Burney

Become an “Offline Explorer”

Access to the Internet is mandatory these days but there are still some scenarios where an Internet connection is out of the question. Sure you could use your cell phone as a dial-up modem or something fancy like that, but with a little foresight, you can download complete Web sites and pages on to your laptop and surf them later just like you were on the Net. A handy application called Offline Explorer from MetaProducts Software Corp. in Columbus, Ohio can help you do just that.

A “Time Shifted” Internet Connection

Think of Offline Explorer (OE) as giving you the ability to “time shift” your Internet surfing experience. If you know that you’re traveling and won’t have access to the Internet, you can use OE to download relevant Web pages and sites that you can surf while you’re away from an Internet leash.

For example, when I traveled for Thanksgiving, I had several Web sites that I needed to visit for research. I knew I wasn’t going to have a connection while on the plane and the relatives I was visiting didn’t have much of an Internet connection at all. So before I left home, I used my broadband connection and Offline Explorer to download all the Web pages and sites I needed. Then it was just a matter of launching the application and clicking around like normal when l wanted to surf.

My example sounds wonderful but I have to admit that it did take me a few attempts to get the “perfect” download scenario. I wanted OE to grab all the text on the Web page and only download the images that were stored on the primary Web server where the page was coming from. That way, OE didn’t download all the banner ads and other extraneous material on the page that would get in the way of a smooth surfing experience. It helps to know a little bit about how Web pages and sites work to really tweak Offline Explorer (OE) to perfection.

When you give OE a URL, it goes out on the Internet and grabs the page – as much of it as you want it to pick up. Each URL is called a “Project” although the “Pro” version of OE will allow you to download multiple URLs at once. You can choose to watch the progress of your download or queue up other downloads as you wait.

Once the Project is done, you can see the page in the internal browser which closely mirrors the functions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Depending on your settings, you’ll see all images, links, and text just like the actual Web page. Surfing with a Wizard

When you launch OE, you’ll see a “New Project Wizard” that will walk you through the process of downloading a URL. You can name your Project and then select certain options to customize how everything is downloaded.

If you don’t want to mess with a wizard, you can go the “quick” route and just paste a URL up in the “Address” bar at the top. You can then select how many “levels” you want to go down and click on the download button.

Setting the “levels” is a very important part of a Project’s properties. A “level” refers to how deep that OE will drill down into a Website. If you give OE a Project and say 0 levels, OE will only grab the text and images on that page and nothing else. If you set the level to 1, then OE will grab everything on the URL you gave it, plus everything from the URLs that are linked to the first URL. Level 2 will grab links from the next pages and so on from there.

Storage space can become an issue with OE. All of your Projects need somewhere to live when you download them. That place would be your hard drive. OE stores everything by default in the C:/Download directory but you can change this in OE’s options.

Pickin’ on the Properties

The “Project Properties” box is where you can tweak a download to the nth degree. First you can apply “filters” to the type of files you want to download. For example, you can tell it to only download text files with certain extensions. Under “images” you can even tell OE to download images with specific dimensions only.

Under the “URL Filters” you can tell OE to only download files from specific servers, directories, or protocols. l really liked these options since l could tell OE to only download the files within the starting domain, but to load any file within the available directories. These options suited my purposes perfectly but it took me about 10 tries to get it just right. Once l did get it right, l saved all of my settings as a template which l use for other pages l wanted to download.

Lastly, you can set other options like scheduling or passwords.

Viewing a Masterpiece

Once you launch OE, you’ll see a list of your Projects in the left pane with OE’s internal browser on the right. As l mentioned above, the internal browser works and looks just like Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. When you double-click on a Project in the left pane, the URL appears in the internal browser. If you don’t like surfing in the small pane, you can maximize the internal browser to full screen. I preferred this setting because it felt more like surfing the real Internet – plus the text on the screen became easier to read.

The Project pane on the left also doubles as the “Map” pane which allows you to view all of the files that were downloaded for a particular Project. This can be both helpful and interesting if you missed downloading all of the information that you were looking to grab.

After you go through all the hassles of tweaking your download to perfection, OE gives you the option of “exporting” your Projects so that you can share them with others. The coolest option here is the ability to save the files and bundle them to burn on to a CD. You can even have OE create an auto-play function so that anyone who receives the CD can just pop it in and go.

Offline the right way

After years of trying different ways to download Web sites and pages, I’m convinced that I’ve found an excellent solution with OE. I’ve tried saving pages through Internet explorer and even saving pages as Adobe PDF files, but nothing cones close to the power of OE in functionality and ease of use. It truly is the best way to surf when you have to be offline.

Offline Explorer 1.9 at Rocketdownload.com

- by Nick Smith

If you pay for an Internet access on a timed-formula, or have a generally lousy connection, off-line browsing is the way to go. This program is one of the best you can use for browsing web pages while disconnected. Within this single program, Offline Explorer allows you to download and view any site on the Internet. You can load up to 100 web sites simultaneously, and can include or exclude individual servers, directories and files with simple keywords. To download a page, type a URL in the address bar, drag and drop a link onto the interface or paste an address from the Clipboard.

Offline Explorer supports FTP and can handle all JavaScript and Java Classes. The program works by downloading "projects" consisting of the web sites you wish to view off-line. Offline Explorer works incredibly well with your normal browser. It can directly import your favorite sites and bookmarks from Internet Explorer, Navigator and Opera. You`ll find no problem accessing particular sites because the program will handle everything from passwords to cookies.

I was amazed with Offline Explorer`s download and retrieval speeds. I also enjoyed having the ability to set limits on downloads. Rather than downloading an entire site, I could grab only the information I wanted. Offline Explorer receives four smileys.

Offline Explorer - I Wonder What I’ll Find?

By: Erik McPherson

Author`s Product Rating: 5 stars

Well I’ve already got Microsoft Internet Explorer and FTP Explorer. This makes me feel Christopher Columbus in itself. Now we’re going to take a look at another product by the name of, you guessed it, Offline Explorer.

Program Specifics

Offline Explorer is a program produced by MetaProducts Software Corporation. They also produce another version of this product titled Offline Explorer Pro. I will explain the differences between these products shortly.

Offline Explorer version 1.4.337 SR2 (They call it 1.4) is a 584 KB download from:

www.metaproducts.com

The basic function of the program is to download Web and FTP sites for offline viewing, editing, and browsing. You can download up to 100 sites at a time. I thought this was a pretty impressive number to be simultaneously running from my computer. The program has a built in browser for easy viewing. The difference that I found with Offline Explorer and other Offline browsing tools is that it will allow you to individually exclude and/or include specific servers, directories, or files. You can also backup/restore your web project through Offline Explorer. This is handy when you make a lot of changes to the website and a mistake is made. You can quickly restore back to the original and then upload back to your web server.

The installation of the product was quick and painless. It put an icon in my Start Menu (Windows 98 SE) and also on my Desktop. I started the program and it came up to Project Setup. It wanted the URL and Project Name of the website I wanted to download. The next screen asked me how deep I wanted to go on the website. The default limit was one page deep. This keeps Offline Explorer from going 500 directories deep into a website that might go all over the Internet. The next setup screen wanted to know what files to get from the site. The default was All Files. You could also set it up to skip any of the following file types:

o Images
o Audio
o Video
o Archive files (.zip, .rar, etc.)

It then wanted to know where to download the files to on my hard drive. I could limit the download to this specific URL or a specific Starting Server or download from any location until my previous limit of how deep to go into the website was reached. The final screen wanted to know when I wanted to download (now, later, or advanced options).

Of course, I can’t keep from clicking on advanced options. I like to get way to deep into things.

Advanced options was packed full of new goodies that the program would perform for you. Just naming a few, they included:

o Size Limit (limit the amount of information you download from the site)
o Scripts (whether to run scripts (cgi, etc.) off of the site after downloaded))
o Java (will enable the processing of Java classes)
o When to update the site (you can have it automatically download at certain intervals or set it to only download when you tell it to. Manual is the default)
o Password (set a password for any changes made to the site)

What good is this to me?

After all your options have been set, you just click on the download button at the top of the screen. This will download the pages, images, and/or files from the site, depending on how your preferences were set. You can then browse through the site, just as if you were looking at the site in Internet Explorer. It also builds a map of the site for you and will show you the URL (Internet Address) of where all the images or files on your site are coming from. You can have multiple projects with multiple websites running at the same time in Offline Explorer.

Differences between Offline Explorer and Offline Explorer Pro

The main differences between these two products are as follows:

Offline Explorer does not support offline viewing of HTTPS (Secured) sites where Offline Explorer Pro does.

There is no Queue Manager in Offline Explorer that allows you to see what sites are being downloaded and which are waiting to be downloaded. This is an option in Offline Explorer Pro.

You cannot download different sites to different directories in Offline Explorer. All the downloaded sites will go to the same directory (c:\download by default). Offline Explorer Pro will allow each site to go to a different directory.

There are a few other advanced features that are different between the two programs, but those are the major ones.

Conclusion

This program done exactly what they said it would do. It downloaded the site and it let me add, change, and/or delete things within the page and put it back onto the site. This is a very handy utility to have when you are working on Web or FTP sites, especially when you’re dealing with multiple sites.

All that math made my head hurt.

This is a very useful utility that will definitely delivers what they promise, no more, no less.

Thanks for reading and God Bless

MetaProduct Offline Explore has become an important part of my life now. After downloading and trying the offline explore I have found peace, in my household. I can download everything that I want then browse it offline. Now nobody compains about taking up the phoneline being online.

There are a lot of offline browser, but believe me MetaProduct offline is best that I have yet to use. I have tried websnake, and blackwidow, but none of them function as well as MetaProducts Offline Explorer. There`s no seconding guessing what you`re doing, where it`s at, and how you can get back to it when you`re using MetaProduct. It`s not complexs like most offline products, it has every thing placed where you`d think it should go. Instead of looking all over things, the webpage is mapped page to page just like it would if you were online looking at the site.

The Design of MetaProducts Offline browser is built for easy access. The Naviagation looks just like a regular web browser. It has a browser built in to it. That broswer is used for easy offline browsering. There is a file tree that you can seperate projects.

You`re not connected to the Internet all the time, so wouldn`t it be nice if you had some way of getting at Internet content when you`re not connected? Offline Explorer will do that for you. It downloads Web pages and entire sites to your computer and stores them, so that you can read them later when you`re not connected. You can also schedule the program to download sites at intervals you set, for automatic operation.

Russian Virtual Software Library

It is a typical situation - there is an interesting site with a deep structure, rich with information and a large amount of money is being spent to view it online. How can you patiently read the site contents and not lose money while paying online access fees? There is only one way, actually, - to load all the site information to your computer and view these pages when you are offline. However, no standard browser is capable of loading a full site with graphics and preserve the directory structure. I faced this problem just few days ago. I like to read books about aviation and especially little-known facts, like on www.luft46.com: German Jet projects at the end of the second world war. After sitting several hours and reading this site I found with horror that my account is empty again. I then searched the Internet for a program to view pages offline. I found two utilities: WebSnake and Offline Explorer.

The first program - WebSnake 1.23, was released in 1997. It has a nice interface and many "Wizards", but I didn`t like it. It loads everything into one directory, renames all the files into messy filename, and it is difficult to view later. It was very hard for me to understand the site structure using the site map tool. And although I tried many times I was unable to view the site offline properly. I am writing about it here just for comparison. It is probably meaningless to use a program which was not developed during the last two years. By the way, the company which developed it has already disappeared.

It seemed to me that the second program, Offline Explorer, is also unable to build directories and a files structure tree of a site. However, its downloading mechanism was above any praises. It worked like a giant funnel loading ten files at a time from the server at once. Even my superslow connection through Russia-on-line showed record speeds. While files were loading the program built a directory and file tree so I could understand the location of the most important files. The program allows you to stop the downloading process and continue it again later. Unfortunately, it is not possible to click on some directory and load only its contents! In a given directory on hard disk, OE created a full site copy. So, I was able to run a common browser and surf through the loaded files, just like I do it on the Internet. But OE also offers an internal browser! While loading you may view documents within the Offline Explorer window and use the visual tree of loaded files. OE settings allow you to set the starting directory, server, domain. OE can load files from all linked sites. There are many filters, inlcuding protocols, file extensions, etc.

It is a wonderful program - fast, easy and clear to use!

Friends: Power Downloader is no bandwidth snob. No sir! Whether he has a T1 line feeding data intravenously to his noodle, or a slow-as-molasses 14.4-kbps dial-up connection, our downloading superstar maneuvers through the wild, wild Web with prowess. Granted, when available bandwidth comes at a premium, one must call upon a tool to hit page after page. Offline Explorer is such a tool.

With this app, our man can download up to 100 Web sites at the same time for later offline viewing. He can also schedule downloads for times when he`s away from his PC, use a regular ol` browser or the program`s internal one to view pages, and import IE Favorites and Netscape Bookmarks. Offline Explorer also lets our man selectively include or exclude individual servers, directories, and files using only keywords. What`s more, it handles cookies, FTP, Macromedia Flash files, JavaScript--practically any kind of Web content one`s apt to come across these days.

Divide and Conquer: Technology Tools for Greater Efficency

An automated tool called an offline browser can take the trudge out of the daily trek to your favorite Web sites. With this type of product, you schedule a time every day or every week as needed to go online to collect the Web pages you specify. As with metasearchers, you can collect that information during off-hours. Then it downloads those pages to your PC so you can view them later when you`re not connected. Typically, offline browsers only download pages that have changed since the last time it checked. Offline Explorer is a good one that is simple to set up and use.

Just set up Offline Explorer to download your favorite sites (up to 100 of them) and when it`s done you can view them as quickly as your PC can access your hard drive (which is a lot faster than most internet connections). Offline Explorer is a really fine tool for downloading and viewing Websites offline. At its simplest, it lets you supply a URL and click the download button to download a page and all first-level links. At its most complex, it gives you complete control over including and excluding downloads from individual servers, folders, URLs, and pages. On large sites, even downloading first-level links can be a massive project, so building a keyword inclusion/exclusion list enables you to limit downloads to the most relevant parts of a site. In addition, you can provide megabyte and file limits for all downloads. Offline Explorer also lets you provide passwords for protected sites and schedule downloads at regular intervals. It comes with an internal browser (which requires Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher to be present on your machine), or you can view sites using any browser on your computer. Downloaded sites are stored as projects, enabling you to save and track multiple sites.
